Gokayama Gassho-zukuri Hamlet: World Heritage in the Remote Wilderness

🏔️ Toyama|May 11, 2026

Toyama's World Heritage

Gokayama in Nanto City, Toyama is registered as World Cultural Heritage as "Shirakawa-go and Gokayama Gassho-zukuri Hamlets." Two registered locations are the Ainokura hamlet and Suganuma hamlet.

Quietude Different from Shirakawa-go

Gokayama's hamlets have fewer visitors than Shirakawa-go, with a quiet atmosphere. The scenery of Gassho-zukuri farmhouses lined in a deep mountain heavy snowfall area is Japan's original rural landscape itself.

Gokayama Traditional Culture

Gokayama has an ancient folk song called "Kokiriko bushi" passed down, famous for dances using the unique folk implement "sasara." The Kokiriko Festival showcases traditional dances.
