Kainan Traditions and Kuroe Lacquerware: Visiting the Lacquer Town with 400 Years of History

The Kuroe district of Kainan City, Wakayama is a major production center of Kishu lacquerware (Kuroe lacquer) that has continued since the late Muromachi period. Once counted among the "three great lacquerwares" and renowned nationwide, craftspeople still preserve traditional techniques today.

Kuroe Townscape: The Lacquerware Craftsmen's Village

Many lacquerware wholesalers and craftsmen's workshops still remain in the Kuroe district, with an old townscape conveying the atmosphere of the Edo period. Walking through the alleyways, the scent of lacquer drifts by, and craftspeople working diligently can be glimpsed. Many direct-sales lacquerware shops also exist, where authentic Kishu lacquerware can be purchased at reasonable prices.

Lacquerware Production Experiences

In Kuroe, there are facilities offering lacquerware painting and coating experiences. Creating your own original lacquerware is a wonderful travel memory. Completed works can be mailed after drying.

Kainan City Cuisine: Kue Hot Pot and Local Fish Dishes

Fresh seafood can also be enjoyed on the coastal side of Kainan City. In particular, "kue" hot pot using the premium fish known as kue (longtooth grouper) is a winter specialty, popular for its collagen-rich, springy texture.
