Mt. Gassan (1,984m) in Yamagata is one of the Three Mountains of Dewa, a long-revered Shugendo sacred peak. One of Tohoku's top high-elevation mountains where snow remains through summer, it is also known as a treasury of alpine plants.

Tips
Gassan weather changes rapidly — even the summit in July is below 15°C. Always bring cold and rain protection.
