Yamagata centered on Sagae City is Japan's premier cherry production area, accounting for over 70% of national cherry production. June–July is cherry picking season, drawing many visitors to tourist orchards.

Tips

Mid-to-late June is peak season. Sato Nishiki has a short prime season — plan your visit carefully. Popular orchards fill on weekends; visit on weekdays or reserve well in advance.
