Zao Onsen on the outskirts of Yamagata City is a distinctive hot spring area where strongly acidic sulfur springs (pH 1–2) bubble up. The milky white water has high skin-beautifying properties and has been beloved as "Zao's waters" since ancient times.

Tips

Public bath admission is a very reasonable ¥200–400. Because it is strongly acidic, always rinse with fresh water after bathing. Your skin will feel silky smooth after bathing.
