Zao Onsen Ski Resort

Zao Onsen Ski Resort at Zao Onsen (880–1,660m elevation) on the outskirts of Yamagata City is Tohoku's largest ski resort — an all-in-one winter resort with diverse courses, abundant snowfall, and a hot spring town.

Ski Resort Features

- Courses: 26 total (beginner through advanced) - Longest Course: Approximately 10km - Elevation Drop: Approximately 780m - Snowfall: Abundant snowfall exceeding 600cm per year at peak

Ice Trees (Snow Monsters)

- Best viewing: January through early March - Views from the summit ropeway are breathtaking - Night tours for evening ice tree viewing also available

Zao Onsen

- Spring Type: Strongly acidic sulfur spring (milky white, pH 1–2) - Benefits: High skin-beautifying and antibacterial effects - Public Baths: Three communal baths — Kamiyu, Shimoyu, and Kawara-yu

Getting There

- From JR Yamagata Shinkansen Yamagata Station by Sankotsu Bus to Zao Onsen: about 40 minutes

Tips

Peak season (January–March) is very crowded on weekends — book accommodation early. The strongly acidic spring is stimulating; rinsing with shower water after bathing is recommended.
