Mine City: Unique Landscapes Created by Karst Plateau and Limestone Terrain
Mine: A Town of Scenic Views Created by Karst Topography
Mine City in Yamaguchi Prefecture is a town with unique natural scenery woven by limestone, centered on "Akiyoshidai," Japan's largest karst plateau. The rare-in-Japan karst topography has high academic value and is designated a quasi-national park.
Akiyoshidai Grasslands and Sheep Rock Formation
In Akiyoshidai's grassland area, a landscape called "hitsujigumbara" (sheep formation) spreads out, with countless white limestone rock masses jutting out. The fantastical scenery looks like a flock of sheep in the grassland, showing different expressions with each season. After spring controlled burning, green growth emerges, and autumn sees pampas grass glowing golden across the plateau.
Limestone Mining and Industry
Mine City is also a production area for limestone used as cement raw material, with large-scale quarries dotting the area. The unique landscape where industry and nature coexist is something not seen in other regions.
Combined Sightseeing of Akiyoshido and Akiyoshidai
The standard Mine sightseeing is a course combining the underground Akiyoshido Cave with the above-ground Akiyoshidai. Both the mysterious underground world and the open grassland on the plateau can be enjoyed in one day.
Access
Car is recommended. Bus access from JR Shin-Yamaguchi Station and Asa Station is also possible. Multiple accommodation facilities are available within Mine City.
