Birthplace of "Setomono"
Seto City in northern Aichi Prefecture is a ceramics production area that is the origin of the Japanese word "setomono" meaning ceramics in general. Pottery production began in the late Heian era with over 1,000 years of history as one of "Japan's Six Ancient Kilns."
Characteristics of Seto Ware
Seto Ware is ceramics with diverse techniques including ash glaze, ash-covered, and kiln change (yohen), with products ranging from everyday items to artworks made. After modern times, production of Western tableware became active, making current Seto City also a major Western tableware production area.
Seto Tourism and Experiences
Seto City has "Setogura" ceramics museum and experience facility. Seto Ware history and manufacturing processes can be learned along with pottery experiences available. "Setomono Festival (September)" holds a large-scale ceramics market with nationwide ceramics gathered.
