Cape Shiriya Kandachi Horses: Wild Horses Thriving in Shimokita's Harsh Winter
Kandachi Horses of Cape Shiriya
The "kandachi" (cold-enduring) horses at Cape Shiriya on the eastern tip of Shimokita Peninsula, Aomori, are a native breed that lives outdoors year-round, surviving even sub-zero winters. Originally bred as farm and military horses, the population fell to just 9 in the 1970s but has recovered to about 40 through conservation efforts.
Highlights
- Free-ranging Horses: Observe horses grazing freely around the cape year-round at close range - Cape Shiriya Lighthouse: Meiji-era white lighthouse creates a picturesque contrast with the horses - Winter Scenery: Herds standing in snow fields create a landscape unlike any other in Japan - Natural Surroundings: Rugged coastline and vast grasslands
Access Hours
- April–November: Drive into the cape area during daytime (admission fee applies) - December–March: Area closed to vehicles; horses still viewable on foot
Getting There
- From JR Ominato Line Shimokita Station by bus to Shiriyazaki-guchi, then taxi or walk - Rental car is recommended for the Shimokita Peninsula
Tips
The horses are semi-wild — do not approach too closely. Use a telephoto lens for photos. Watch for icy roads in winter.
