Tobe Ware: Beautiful Ehime Traditional Pottery with Indigo Paintings on White Ground
Tobe Ware: Sturdy and Beloved Ehime Folk Pottery
Tobe ware produced mainly in Tobe Town, Iyo District, Ehime Prefecture, is a traditional pottery art continuing from the mid-18th century. It is a blue-and-white pottery with gosu (dye containing cobalt) paintings on a white porcelain base, nationally known as sturdy and practical folk pottery that is hard to chip or break.
Characteristics of Tobe Ware
Tobe ware is characterized by pure white base material and vivid indigo blue paintings. Traditional patterns including "arabesque," "waves," "pine, bamboo, and plum," and "birds and animals" are common, but innovative works by contemporary artists are also increasing. Thick-walled and heavy, it is also characterized by such sturdiness that it is said to be "hard to break even if dropped."
Tobe Ware Traditional Industries Hall and Kiln Tours
At Tobe Town's "Tobe Ware Traditional Industries Hall," the history and manufacturing process of Tobe ware can be learned. Over 100 kilns are gathered in the town, with the fun of finding a favorite piece while touring kilns. Some kilns also offer pottery painting experiences.
Combination with Tobe Zoo
Tobe Town has "Ehime Prefectural Tobe Zoo," popular with families. A popular one-day sightseeing course combining zoo visits with Tobe ware browsing is popular.
