Obama City is the central city of Fukui's Wakasa region, known as "Gotsukuni" (food-offering province) that supplied ingredients (food offering) to the imperial court in the Nara and Heian eras. Wakasa's seafood and ingredients were transported to Kyoto via the "Saba Kaido (Mackerel Road)," contributing to the development of Japan's food culture.
City with Historical Temples and Shrines Scattered
Obama City is a historical city also called the "Hokuriku's Nara" with many historical temples and shrines scattered including Wakasahime Shrine, Wakasahiko Shrine (Wakasa Ichinomiya and Ninomiya), Myotsuji Temple (national treasure), and Mantokuji Temple.
Mackerel Road and Kyoto Food Culture
The "Saba Kaido (Wakasa Road)" that transported mackerel from Wakasa to Kyoto is still popular as a hiking course. "Wakasa saba-zushi (mackerel pressed sushi)" said to have been salted and transported overnight reaching just the right salt level is representative Wakasa gourmet.
