Hikosan: Sacred Site of Mountain Asceticism
Hikosan (Hikosan, elevation 1,200 meters) in Soeda Town, Tagawa-gun, Fukuoka Prefecture, is a sacred mountain known as a mountain of mountain asceticism (shugendo) since the Nara period. It is one of "Japan's Three Great Mountains of Mountain Asceticism" alongside Omine Mountain (Nara) and Dewa Sanzan (Yamagata). It is a unique mountain where the tradition of mountain worship and natural scenery are unified.
Hikosan Jingu and Hoheisho
"Hikosan Jingu" is enshrined from mid-mountain to the summit of Hikosan. Buildings designated as Important Cultural Properties including the Kagura Hall and Hoheisho are arranged on the mountain, still functioning as a training ground for mountain ascetics. A slope car allows access to near the Hoheisho.
Mountaineering and Nature
Hikosan is also popular with mountaineers, with multiple hiking courses developed. From the summit, surrounding mountains and Fukuoka plain can be viewed at a glance. The beauty of each season can be enjoyed: spring shakunage (rhododendron), summer greenery, autumn foliage, and winter snow scenery.
Soeda Park and Surrounding Tourism
"Soeda Park" at the foot of Hikosan is popular as a local cherry blossom spot with beautiful spring cherry blossoms. Many kilns of "Koishiwara-yaki (Koishiwara ware)" are also in the vicinity, where pottery experiences are available.
Access
Approximately 30 minutes by bus from JR Hitahikosan Line "Soeda Station." Or convenient access by car (to Hikosan slope car boarding area).
