Fukuyama Castle and the Rose City: Castle Visible from Shinkansen Platform and One Million Roses
"Fukuyama Castle" in eastern Hiroshima's Fukuyama City is a castle built in 1622 (Genna 8), adjacent immediately north of JR Fukuyama Station. In the very unusual location of being viewable from Shinkansen platforms, it is famous as "the castle visible from the station" delighting Shinkansen passengers.
Castle Tower and Iron-Plated Exterior
Fukuyama Castle's tower is known for having its north exterior wall covered with iron plates. Said to be a defense against attack from Date Masamune, this is an extremely unusual structure among Japanese castles. After large-scale restoration completed for the 400th anniversary of the castle's construction in 2022, an exterior close to the original appearance was recreated.
Fukuyama, City of One Million Roses
Fukuyama City is also famous as "the city of roses," with approximately one million roses planted throughout the city. Particularly during the May Rose Festival, roses reach full bloom in parks throughout the city, allowing strolling through rose arches.
Gateway to Tomonoura
Fukuyama City is also the gateway to the previously mentioned Tomonoura. Staying in Fukuyama with convenient Shinkansen access allows enjoying Seto Inland Sea sightseeing at Tomonoura, Onomichi, and elsewhere.
Access
3 minutes on foot from JR Fukuyama Station to the castle (right from the north exit). Shinkansen and Sanyo Main Line available.
