Izushi: Little Kyoto of Tajima and Castle Town of Sara Soba
Izushi
Little Kyoto of Tajima
Izushi prospered as the castle town of Izushi Domain with 58,000 koku during the Edo period, with grid-pattern streets and samurai residence sites and merchant houses still remaining in the center. The beautiful townscape called "Little Kyoto of Tajima" is a hidden gem tourist spot in the Kinki/Kansai region.
Shinkorou Tower
Izushi's symbol "Shinkorou" is a clocktower built in 1871, one of Japan's oldest active clocktowers. This retro tower at the town center is an indispensable photography spot for Izushi tourism.
Sara Soba
Izushi's specialty "sara soba" is bite-sized soba served on small plates, said to have been spread by a soba maker who came from Shinshu in the Edo period. The unique style of ordering about 5 plates and eating while changing condiments (grated yam, raw egg, green onion, wasabi) is distinctive.
Izushi Castle Ruins
Stone walls and turrets of Izushi Castle built on Yukinoyama Mountain remain, with the castle hill and access bridge creating a beautiful landscape. The view of Izushi townscape from the castle ruins is exceptional.
