Noto Satoyama Satoumi: Rich Nature and Culture of a World Agricultural Heritage
Noto: World Agricultural Heritage
The Noto Peninsula's satoyama and satoumi in Ishikawa was certified as "World Agricultural Heritage (GIAHS)" by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 2011. The agricultural system integrating terraced fields, satoyama, satoumi, and traditional farming and fishing is highly evaluated.
Shiroyone Senmaida (Thousand Rice Fields)
Noto Peninsula's representative landscape "Shiroyone Senmaida" is spectacular scenery with about 1,000 terraced rice fields spreading on steep slopes in Shirome Town, Wajima City. The terraced rice field scenery spreading step by step toward the Sea of Japan shows completely different faces by season. In autumn, an illumination event called "Aze no Kirameki" is held.
Noto's Traditional Farming and Fishing
In Noto, traditional farming and fishing including ama diving, raised beach salt fields, and Oku-Noto agricultural and marine products are inherited to modern times. Noto cuisine utilizing local ingredients is charming for its simple yet rich flavors.
