Ritsurin Garden: Six Ponds and Thirteen Artificial Hills of an Edo-Period Feudal Lord Garden
Ritsurin Garden: Japan's Highest Standard Feudal Lord Garden That Shikoku is Proud of
"Ritsurin Garden (Ritsurin-koen)" in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, is a strolling garden completed over approximately 100 years by Takamatsu domain lord Matsudaira Yorishige. Designated as a national Special Scenic Beauty, it is a representative Japanese famous garden that earned three stars in the Michelin Green Guide.
Six Ponds and Thirteen Artificial Hills
Six ponds and thirteen artificial hills are arranged within the garden, allowing enjoyment of "one step, one view" beauty where scenery changes with each step. The technique of "borrowed scenery" incorporating the background Mt. Shiun (220 meters elevation) as part of the garden beauty is also magnificent.
Tea House and Japanese Experience
At "Kikugetsutei" within the garden, the experience of viewing the garden while enjoying matcha and wagashi sweets is possible (fee required). It is a luxurious time savoring the same scenery that Edo-period feudal lords cherished, while tilting a tea bowl.
Seasonal Highlights
Spring cherry blossoms, plum, and azaleas; summer iris and lotus; autumn foliage; and winter snow scenery allow enjoyment of beauty through the four seasons. Since the garden opens early in the morning, morning garden strolls are also recommended.
