Takamatsu Castle Ruins (Tamamo Park): One of Japan's Three Great Sea Castles with Seawater Moat

Takamatsu Castle is a castle built by Ikoma Chikamasa in 1588, famous as a "sea castle (water castle)" with seawater from the Seto Inland Sea drawn into its outer moat. Counted as one of "Japan's Three Great Sea Castles" alongside Imabari Castle (Ehime) and Nakatsu Castle (Oita). Currently developed as "Tamamo Park (Tamamo-koen)," with stone walls, moats, and a moon-viewing watchtower remaining.

Stone Walls and Sea Scenery

The stone walls facing the seawater outer moat change expression with the tides. At high tide, the beautiful scenery of stone walls reflected in the water surface spreads out, particularly spectacular at dusk. The unusual sight of saltwater fish like sea bream and mullet swimming in the moat is also noteworthy.

Moon-Viewing Watchtower and Castle Facilities

The "Tsukimi Yagura" (Moon-Viewing Watchtower) designated as a national Important Cultural Property features Edo-period architecture. The Takamatsu cityscape and Seto Inland Sea can be viewed from the castle tower platform. An exhibition hall on stone walls is also within the castle grounds, allowing learning about Takamatsu Castle's history.

Seasonal Flowers and Park

Loved by citizens as a park where seasonal flowers can be enjoyed including spring cherry blossoms, plum, and azaleas, and summer lotus flowers.

Access

Excellent location approximately 5 minutes on foot from JR Takamatsu Station. Popular as a Takamatsu sightseeing staple, with a course combining it with Ritsurin Garden being popular.
