Yashima: The Seto Inland Sea Plateau That Served as the Stage for the Genpei War
Yashima in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, is a plateau formed from solidified lava jutting into the Seto Inland Sea (approximately 292 meters above sea level), known as the stage for the "Battle of Yashima (Genpei War)" in 1185. It is the location of the famous episode where Nasu no Yoichi shot the target fan on a Heike ship with a bow.
Shikoku Village and Folk Culture
At the base of Yashima is "Shikoku Village (Museum)," exhibiting 33 ancient buildings relocated from various Shikoku locations including old farmhouses, village headman's residences, and watermills. It is popular as an outdoor museum allowing experience of Japanese rural culture.
Highlights on Yashima Summit
The summit plateau has "Yashima-ji Temple (Shikoku 88 Temples No. 84)," "Tenrandai Observation Deck," and "Yashima Aquarium." From Tenrandai, a 360-degree panorama of the Sanuki Plain, Takamatsu city, Seto Inland Sea, and Mt. Goken spreads out.
Genpei Ancient Battlefield Monument
Near the "South Ridge Observation Deck" on the south side of Yashima, a monument commemorating the Battle of Yashima is erected. You can reflect on history while imagining the former coastline (now reclaimed for farmland).
