Niyodo River: The "Niyodo Blue" Clear Stream Boasting Japan's Highest Transparency
Niyodo River: The King of Clear Streams Boasting Japan's Top Water Quality
The Niyodo River (Niyodo-gawa) flowing through central Kochi Prefecture is a clear stream 124 kilometers long sourced from Mt. Ishizuchi in the Shikoku mountains. Water quality selected as "Japan's number one" multiple times in Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism water quality surveys glows in a mysterious blue-green called "Niyodo Blue" when specific conditions align.
Niyodo Blue at Niko-buchi
"Niko-buchi," located in the upper reaches of the Yasui River, a tributary of the Niyodo River, is the place where Niyodo Blue can be experienced most vividly. The deep pool where waterfall water falls glows in vivid emerald green depending on the angle of light, creating a mysterious sight.
River Play and Rafting
Activities such as rafting, canoeing, and snorkeling on the Niyodo River are popular. Water play in a highly transparent river is exceptional, also ideal for summer family trips.
Sightseeing Along the Niyodo River
Unique tourist spots are scattered throughout the Niyodo River basin including "Ino Town (Paper Museum)," "Ochi Town (Yokogurayama Natural Forest Museum)," and "Sakawa Town (sake brewery town)."
