Tosa Local Sake: Kochi's Sake Supporting the Drinking Communication Culture
Tosa Local Sake: Kochi's Sake Kingdom That Kochi is Proud of
Kochi Prefecture is famous for its "drinking communication" culture, and supporting this culture is Kochi's local sake. Nationally known brands including "Tosa Tsuru," "Tsukasa Botan," "Suigei," and "Bunkajin" were born here โ it is one of Japan's leading sake regions.
Sake Born from Kochi's Water and Climate
Kochi Prefecture, with many clear streams including the Shimanto River and Monobe River, has abundant clear underground water suitable for sake brewing. Also, the warm climate is suitable for rice cultivation, with local sake brewing using "Tosa rice" thriving.
Tosa Sake Culture "Beku Cups"
Kochi's banquet culture "beku cups" is a traditional way of drinking using unique sake cups (gui-nomi) with rounded bottoms. Because the bottom is not flat, they cannot be placed on a table and must be held until emptied. It is a banquet tool symbolizing Kochi's "drink-to-the-bottom culture."
Sake Brewery Tours and Tastings
Breweries are scattered in Kochi city, Aki City, Sakawa Town, and elsewhere, with some breweries conducting tours and tasting tours. "Sake Brewery Tours" around Kochi local sake are also popular tourism content.
