Amakusa Five Bridges: Spectacular Group of 5 Bridges Connecting Western Kyushu Coast
"Amakusa Five Bridges" connecting from Misumi, Ueki City, Kumamoto Prefecture, through Amakusa Kamishima and Shimoshima to Hondo are a collective term for 5 bridges completed in 1966 (formerly Amakusa Pearl Line). Against a backdrop of the multi-island beauty of Shiranui Sea (Yatsushiro Sea) with large and small islands scattered, the scenery of 5 bridges connecting has beauty called "a string of pearls."
Highlights of Each Bridge
The 5 bridges are each called "No. 1 Bridge (Tenmon Bridge)," "No. 2 Bridge (Oyano Bridge)," "No. 3 Bridge (Naka no Bridge)," "No. 4 Bridge (Maeshima Bridge)," and "No. 5 Bridge (Matsushima Bridge)." The largest "Tenmon Bridge" in particular is a magnificent bridge spanning the strait, with spectacular views from the bridge.

"Amakusa Pearl Cruise (pleasure boat)" departing from Misumi Port or Matsushima allows viewing Amakusa Five Bridges and multi-island beauty from the sea. Dolphins can also be observed depending on the season.
Roadside Station "Shiranui" and Seafood
"Roadside Station Shiranui" in the Misumi area allows purchasing local seafood and agricultural products. "Shiranui" is a variety of mandarin oranges said to originate in this region.
Access
JR Misumi Line "Misumi Station" is the departure point. Approximately 45 minutes from Kumamoto Station by Misumi Line. Local bus from Misumi to Amakusa/Hondo (approximately 1 hour 30 minutes).
