Saga-Toriimoto: Edo Period Atmosphere Remaining in the Depths of Kyoto's Arashiyama
Saga-Toriimoto
Village Retaining Edo Atmosphere
Toriimoto is a roadside settlement that prospered with pilgrims to Adashino Nembutsuji and Atago Shrine, still preserving old farmhouses with thatched roofs and earthen walls. Its quiet satoyama scenery, contrasting with the busy Arashiyama tourist area, is charming.
Adashino Nembutsuji
Adashino Nembutsuji, said to have been founded by Kobo Daishi in the Heian period, is a unique temple with over 8,000 stone Buddhas and stone pagodas densely packed in the grounds for unclaimed souls. In August, "Nembutsu-e" ceremony lights votive candles before the stone Buddhas.
Two Teahouses
Toriimoto's specialty is the two teahouses continuing since the Edo period, "Hiranoya" and "Tsutaya." In charming thatched buildings, Kyoto specialty dishes like yudofu tofu and sweetfish cuisine can be enjoyed.
Bamboo Grove and Rural Strolling
The Sagano rural landscape and bamboo grove areas change expression by season. Cherry blossoms in spring, greenery in summer, autumn foliage, and winter snow scenes make this a strolling area with beauty through all four seasons.
