Tofukuji Autumn Foliage: Kyoto's Largest Scale Autumn Foliage Spot
Tofukuji Autumn Foliage
Kyoto's Largest Autumn Foliage Spot
Tofukuji, one of Kyoto's Five Great Zen Temples built by regent Kujo Michiie in the Kamakura period, has about 2,000 maple trees densely packed in the valley viewed from Tsutenyo Bridge, creating a scene like a red carpet in November.
View from Tsutenyo Bridge
The autumn foliage viewed from Tsutenyo Bridge (National Important Cultural Property) spanning the valley is exceptional. The sea of autumn leaves spreading on both sides of the bridge is Kyoto's signature autumn spectacular view, a favorite shooting spot for photographers on SNS.
Hojo Garden
Tofukuji's main temple garden (National Special Scenic Spot) is a modern dry landscape garden designed by Showa era garden designer Mirei Shigemori. The creative design fusing checkered paving stones and moss gardens is worth seeing separately from the foliage.
Access and Crowds
Convenient access within 10 minutes walk from JR Tofukuji Station and Keihan Tofukuji Station is also attractive. However, the autumn foliage season is very crowded, so weekday or early morning visits are recommended.
