Futami Okitama Shrine: The Purification Shrine Enshrining Sarutahiko Okami
Futami Okitama Shrine
Place of Purification Before Ise Pilgrimage
Futami Okitama Shrine, with Sarutahiko Okami as main deity, is the site where pilgrims have performed "hama sanguu" (seaside purification) in the ocean before worshipping at Ise Jingu since the Heian period.
Relationship with Meoto Iwa
The Meoto Iwa visible from the shrine grounds are considered the torii gate for Okitama divine rock offshore and are part of the shrine's sacred domain. Rope-changing rituals for Meoto Iwa are held in May and September each year, maintained by local people.
Frog Motifs
The grounds feature countless frog figurines and votive offerings, as the frog is considered the messenger of Sarutahiko Okami, symbolizing matchmaking and travel safety.
Spectacular Sunrise
Around the summer solstice, a spectacular sunrise between Meoto Iwa can be seen, drawing many worshippers and photography enthusiasts from early morning. The sunrise over the coastal torii and Meoto Iwa is a signature Ise scenery.
