Ise Udon: Ise's Specialty Soft Thick Noodles with Rich Sauce
Ise Udon
History of Sanguu Udon
Ise udon is a local food served to pilgrims since the Edo period. The very thick noodles cooked for a long time are soft and fluffy, completely opposite in texture to the "firm" texture of ordinary udon.
Distinctive Sauce
The black sauce is a rich blend of tamari soy sauce base with mirin and kelp dashi. The basic eating style involves mixing a small amount of sauce into the noodles, different from ordinary udon soaked in broth.
Food Walking at Okage Yokocho
Multiple Ise udon restaurants at Okage Yokocho in front of the Inner Shrine allow easy enjoyment before or after worship, beloved by tourists as one of Ise's three great foods alongside tekone sushi and Akafuku.
Home Recreation
Dry noodles, fresh noodles, and sauce sets are sold as Ise souvenirs, allowing home recreation of authentic flavors, popular as travel mementos.
