Goto Islands: World Heritage Hidden Christian Sites and Beautiful Sea Islands
Goto Islands: World Heritage and Beautiful Sea Outlying Islands
"Goto Islands," floating in the East China Sea west of Nagasaki Prefecture, is an island group comprising 5 large islands — Fukue Island, Naru Island, Hisaka Island, Nakadori Island, and Wakamatsu Island — and numerous small islands. Registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 2018 as a component of "Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region."
History of Hidden Christians
Under the Edo period ban on Christianity, farmers and fishermen on the Goto Islands lived outwardly as Buddhists and Shintoist while secretly maintaining Christian faith (hidden Christians). When the discovery of Nagasaki believers became public in 1865, faith was also revived in the Goto Islands and many church buildings were constructed. Over 30 churches are scattered throughout the islands today.
Church Visiting in Goto
Beautiful church architecture including "Kashiragashima Cathedral (World Heritage)" is scattered across various islands. Churches of various styles including stone churches, wooden churches, and brick churches harmonize with island scenery.
Goto's Nature and Sea
The sea around Goto Islands has high transparency, with snorkeling, diving, and ocean swimming enjoyable. Volcanic terrain including "Onidake" and seasonal nature including fresh greenery and autumn foliage are also highlights.
