Ikitsuki Island: A Western Edge Island Where the Faith of Hidden Christians Still Lives
Ikitsuki Island: An Island of 250 Years of Secret Faith
"Ikitsuki Island" in Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture, is a small island floating northwest of Hirado Island. Known as a sacred site for "hidden Christians" — islanders who secretly maintained Christian faith under the Edo period ban on Christianity (1613–1873).
Faith of Hidden Christians
Hidden Christians on Ikitsuki Island maintained Christian faith internally while wearing the outer shell of Buddhism and Shinto under the prohibition order. Prayers called "oratio (something evolved from Latin and Portuguese prayer words)" have been passed down orally through generations, still being inherited in some households today.
Yamada Church and Museum
"Ikitsuki Island Museum - Shima no Yakata" on the island exhibits the history of hidden Christians, items of faith, and materials. Learning about Ikitsuki's Christian culture and whaling culture (major industry in the Edo period) is possible.
Obae Cliff and Lighthouse
"Obae Cliff" at the northern tip of Ikitsuki Island is a magnificent natural landscape where cliffs approximately 100 meters high continue. Spectacular views of Genkai Sea can be viewed from the lighthouse on the cliff.
