Nagasaki Nanban Sweets: Foreign Confectionery Culture Fragrant with Castella and Peach Castella
Nagasaki Castella: Famous Nagasaki Sweet Snack Born from Nanban Confectionery
"Castella" is a baked confectionery that arrived in Nagasaki in the 16th century based on the Portuguese confectionery "Pão de ló" and developed uniquely. It is a rectangular sponge cake baked in a wooden frame with wheat flour, sugar, chicken eggs, and starch syrup as main ingredients. Nagasaki has many long-established shops founded in the Edo period including "Fukusaya (founded 1624)," "Bunmeido," and "Shokoken (founded 1681)."
Characteristics of Nagasaki Castella
The greatest characteristic of Nagasaki castella is "coarse sugar (raw sugar) on the bottom face." Coarse sugar crystals remaining on the bottom after baking are the proof of genuine Nagasaki castella. Characterized by fluffy elastic texture and unique sweetness.
Peach Castella
In Nagasaki, "momo castella (peach castella)" is also a specialty. It is castella with peach-shaped sugar decorations ā originally a good luck item for Hinamatsuri (Doll Festival). Currently a popular Nagasaki souvenir confectionery.
Nagasaki's Nanban Confectionery Culture
Beyond castella, Nagasaki retains nanban confectionery culture including "kompeitou (sugar candy)," "boro," and "confeita." It is a city where the "food history" can be enjoyed alongside Dejima and Chinatown.
