Omura Bay: Nagasaki's Lake-Like Inland Sea and Shinkansen Station Gateway Town
Omura Bay: Japan's Largest Class Inland Bay Surrounded by Land
"Omura Bay" spreading in the central part of Nagasaki Prefecture is an inland bay approximately 160 kilometers in circumference, surrounded by land on three sides. Because the bay mouth is very narrow (Harijose, Hayakise) and almost closed, waves are calm and aquaculture of pearls, oysters, and seaweed flourishes. The Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen (Nagasaki Shinkansen) "Shin-Omura Station" that opened in 2022 is also located along Omura Bay.
Pearl Cultivation and Omura Bay Industry
Omura Bay's calm sea conditions are optimal for pearl cultivation โ Japan's leading pearl production area alongside Ago Bay in Mie Prefecture. Oyster cultivation is also active, with locally produced oysters enjoyable in Omura, Isahaya, Saikai, and other areas from winter through spring.
Omura Park and Cherry Blossoms
"Omura Park" in Omura City is a flower-viewing spot where "hamaguri-zakura" โ Japan's oldest cherry blossom variety โ and others bloom. "Omura Cherry Blossom Festival" is held in spring, attracting many flower-viewing visitors.
Access with Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen
The Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen (Nagasaki to Takeo Onsen) that opened September 23, 2022, runs along Omura Bay. Stopping at "Shin-Omura Station," "Isahaya Station," and others, access to central Nagasaki has become convenient.
Access
JR "Omura Station" or Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen "Shin-Omura Station" is the base for Omura Bay tourism. Approximately 30 minutes by local train from Nagasaki Station.
