Shimabara Peninsula: Nagasaki's Tourism Area Where Volcanoes and History Interweave

"Shimabara Peninsula" jutting southeast from Nagasaki Prefecture is a volcanic zone centered on Mt. Unzen Fugaku (Unzen Fugake-dake, 1,359 meters). Certified as "Shimabara Peninsula UNESCO World Geopark" in 2009, with volcanic terrain, hot springs, and rich nature as highlights.

Unzen Onsen

Unzen Onsen is a hot spring resort included in Japan's first national park (designated 1934). The fumarolic area where white steam (called "jigoku/hell") rises creates unique scenery. Sulfur spring hot water is also known as a "beauty spring."

Shimabara Castle and the Shimabara Rebellion

"Shimabara Castle (Shimabara-jo, completed 1625)" was the stage of the "Shimabara Rebellion (1637–38)" led by Amakusa Shiro. From Shimabara Castle's keep, Ariake Sea and the opposite shore of Kumamoto Prefecture can be viewed at a glance. The Shimabara Rebellion was a historic uprising that became a trigger for the shogunate strengthening Christian suppression.

Flowing Water and City Where Carp Swim

Water spring spots including "Yusuigarden Shimeiso" exist within Shimabara city, with waterways where carp swim networked through the city streets. The refreshing water scenery known as "Shimabara, City of Water" can be enjoyed.

Access

Nearest station is Shimabara Railway "Shimabara Station." Approximately 1 hour from Isahaya Station by JR and Shimabara Railway. Or accessible by ferry from Kumamoto Port (approximately 30 minutes to Shimabara Gaiko Port).
