Tsushima: A Historic Island That Connected the Korean Peninsula and Japan
Tsushima in Tsushima City, Nagasaki Prefecture, is an island located in northwest Kyushu โ a "border island" approximately 50 kilometers from Busan, South Korea, and approximately 132 kilometers from the Japanese mainland (Kyushu mainland). Functioning since ancient times as a relay point connecting the Korean Peninsula and Japan, it is a historic island also recorded in the Nihon Shoki.
Tsushima's History and Joseon Diplomatic Missions
"Joseon Diplomatic Missions" dispatched from Korea (Joseon) to Japan (Edo) during the Edo period (1607โ1811) always passed through Tsushima. The So family of Tsushima was responsible for diplomatic relations and hospitality of the missions, playing an important role as a window for Japan-Korea diplomacy. Many materials and historical sites related to the Joseon Diplomatic Missions remain in Tsushima City today.
Tsushima Leopard Cat
"Tsushima Leopard Cat" inhabiting Tsushima is a rare wild cat designated as a National Natural Monument. It is an endemic species that evolved uniquely on Tsushima isolated from the continent, with the number of individuals at approximately 100 or so โ very few. Information gathering and conservation activities are conducted at the Tsushima Wildlife Conservation Center.
Ocean Spectacular Views and Ocean Swimming
The surrounding sea of Tsushima is beautiful, with high-transparency snorkeling and ocean swimming enjoyable. "Miuta Beach" is a beautiful beach selected among Japan's Top 100 Beaches.
Access
Approximately 30โ35 minutes by airplane from Nagasaki Airport or Fukuoka Airport (JAL, ANA, etc.). Or ferry from Hakata Port to Izuhara Port (approximately 5 hours).
