Walking Japan's Oldest Road
Yamanobe-no-michi is Japan's oldest official road appearing in Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, a hiking route running north-south along the eastern edge of Nara Basin's mountain foot. The about 16km route from Sakurai City to Tenri City has many ancient burial mounds, shrines, and temples scattered.
Chogakuji
Chogakuji in Tenri City is an ancient temple said to have been founded by Kukai in 824. Known for special displays of hell paintings, with beautiful autumn foliage. Chogakuji's azalea flowers (April-May) are also famous as one of spring's highlights.
Byakugoji
Byakugoji in Takabatake-cho, Nara City, is an ancient temple associated with Prince Shiki, son of Emperor Tenji. Located on high ground in eastern Nara City, known as a famous spot for bush clover flowers (September-October), attracting many worshippers.
Yamanobe-no-michi Hiking
Yamanobe-no-michi is a hiking route with little elevation change, easy for beginners. The experience of walking between persimmon, strawberry, and mandarin orange orchards while touring ancient history sites becomes a deep journey touching the essence of Nara.
