Kibitsu Shrine: Majestic Shrine of Momotaro Legend with Distinctive Continuous Corridors

Kibitsu Shrine in Kita-ku, Okayama City is an ancient shrine enshrining Kibitsu-hiko-no-Mikoto, the hero who defeated Ura (the model for Momotaro), as its main deity, known as the Momotaro legend shrine. As the highest-ranking shrine (ichinomiya) of Bicchu Province, it attracts worshippers from nationwide.

National Treasure Main Hall and Hiyoku-Irimoya Style

Kibitsu Shrine's main hall is built in the unique architectural style called "Hiyoku-Irimoya-zukuri," designated as a National Treasure. The distinctive exterior of two connected irimoya roofs is a rare architectural style seen only at Kibitsu Shrine.

360m Corridor

The shrine's corridor is approximately 360 meters long, extending from the main hall to end shrines and the Okama-den (sacred cauldron hall). Walking the corridor with lanterns lined on both sides allows full appreciation of the shrine's solemn atmosphere. Walking in morning and evening light is particularly fantastical.

Narikama Ceremony

The "Narikama Ceremony" (ringing cauldron ceremony) performed at Okama-den is a special ritual divining good or bad fortune from the volume of sound produced when steaming rice in a cauldron. As a ritual unique to Kibitsu Shrine, many worshippers have sought fortune readings here since ancient times.

Access
