Okayama, Hometown of Momotaro: Historical Walk Tracing the Oni-Slaying Legend of Kibi Road
Okayama Prefecture is considered the birthplace of the universally known folktale "Momotaro (Peach Boy)." The legend of an oni (demon) called "Ura" said to be the model for the protagonist Momotaro has long been passed down in the Kibi region, and "Kibi-ji (Kibi Road) tours" exploring the legendary sites are a popular sightseeing course.
Kinojo Castle
"Kinojo Castle" in Soja City, Okayama is the ruin of an ancient mountain castle built in the 7th century. Connected to the Momotaro legend as the castle where "Ura" lived, the restored west gate and stone walls evoke thoughts of the Momotaro legend. Panoramic views of the Okayama Plain can also be enjoyed from the castle ruins.
Kibitsu Shrine and Kibitsu-hiko Shrine
After Momotaro's victory in the demon-slaying, "Kibitsu Shrine" and "Kibitsu-hiko Shrine" enshrining the protagonist (Kibitsu-hiko-no-Mikoto) are located along the Kibi Road. Kibitsu Shrine's "Naribiki-no-kama" (ringing cauldron ceremony) is said to be a cauldron sealing Ura's grudge, with ceremonies still performed today.
Kibi Road Cycling
"Kibi Road Cycling" touring Kibi Road historical sites including Bicchu Kokubunji Temple, Kibitsu Shrine, Kinojo Castle, and Tsukuriyama Ancient Tomb by bicycle is a popular course running through tranquil rural scenery.
