"Ikurodo," a National Natural Monument limestone cave suddenly opening from limestone cliffs along the Takahashi River in Niimi City, Okayama. The cave interior of 1,200 meters total length and maximum 70-meter ceiling height spreads a fantastical world created by diverse stalactites, stalagmites, and columns.
Highlights of Ikurodo
The cave interior has developed viewing paths, taking approximately 40 minutes to explore on foot. The biggest highlight is the gigantic space called "Daibakufu (Great Waterfall)" with 70-meter ceiling height. The cave interior temperature is approximately 15°C year-round, with comfortable viewing — cool in summer and warm in winter.
Rashomon Limestone Formation
Within Niimi City is also "Rashomon," a National Natural Monument limestone formation. A natural rock arch 40 meters high and 15 meters wide created by river erosion — a magnificent sculptural beauty created by nature.
Niimi Grapes and Local Gourmet
The Niimi City area is also a grape producing area with grape picking enjoyable in autumn. Also, game cuisine (deer, wild boar) unique to mountain areas where hunting culture remains can be enjoyed.
