Kishiwada Danjiri Festival
Life-Risking Intensity
Kishiwada Danjiri Festival is an autumn festival with over 300 years of history, where the "yarimawashi" (corner turning) of 5-6 ton danjiri floats running at high speed is the greatest highlight. Nationally famous as a dangerous festival where injuries are common.
Danjiri Structure
Danjiri are wooden floats mainly made of zelkova wood, also works of art with elaborate carvings. "Daiku-kata" performers ride the front giving bold performances, while dozens pull ropes from behind while running.
Yomiya and Honmiya
The third Saturday and Sunday of September's yomiya (evening festival) and honmiya (main festival) are the festival's climax. Thirty-four danjiri from throughout the city race through the streets, with the simultaneous procession in front of Kishiwada Castle creating an overwhelming scene.
Kishiwada Castle and Tourism
Kishiwada Castle from the Tokugawa period remains in Kishiwada City, with strolling the old city retaining castle town character also enjoyable. Even outside the festival period, the Danjiri Hall offers actual danjiri displays and video viewing.
