Higashiyoka Tidal Flat: A Paradise of Life Nurtured by Ariake Sea

"Higashiyoka Tidal Flat" spreading along the Ariake Sea coast in Saga City, Saga Prefecture, is a vast tidal flat of approximately 476 hectares. Located on an important migration route for sandpipers and plovers, tens of thousands of migratory birds arrive during spring and autumn migration seasons. Registered as a Ramsar Convention Wetland in 2015.

Migratory Bird Observation

Many migratory birds can be observed at Higashiyoka Tidal Flat in spring (April–May) and autumn (August–October). Particularly many sandpipers and plovers including dunlin, greenshank, and grey plover are present — an ideal spot for birdwatching. Observation with binoculars from the tidal flat observation deck and observation hall is possible.

Mudskippers and Tidal Flat Creatures

Unique creatures inhabit Ariake Sea's tidal flats including "mudskippers (fish unique to Ariake Sea)," "fiddler crabs (crabs with one enlarged claw)," and "warasubo (deep-sea fish without eyes)." Best to observe during low-tide periods when the tidal flat is exposed.

Higata Yoka Park

"Higata Yoka Park" adjacent to the tidal flat has an observation deck, barbecue facilities, and playground areas — a park popular with families.

Access

Approximately 30 minutes by bus from JR "Saga Station." Or approximately 20 minutes by car. Visiting to coincide with low tide times (check tide tables) is recommended for tidal flat viewing.
