Ureshino Tea: A Famous Tea Production Area Representing Western Japan

"Ureshino tea," produced in the Ureshino City and Kashima City area of Saga Prefecture, is one of Japan's Three Great Famous Teas alongside Uji tea (Kyoto) and Sayama tea (Saitama). Tea produced by the "kama-iri (pan-fried) method" incorporating Chinese and Ming dynasty production methods during the Edo period is famous, characterized by unique aroma and mellow sweetness.

Characteristics of Ureshino Tea

The greatest characteristic of Ureshino tea is round-shaped tea leaves called "tama-ryokucha (round green tea)." A unique aroma is created by drying with the pan-fried method. Also, brewing tea with Ureshino's hot spring water (sodium bicarbonate spring) causes the tea leaves to dissolve, creating a rich umami "hot spring tea" โ€” another charm of Ureshino tea.

Combined Tourism with Ureshino Onsen

Ureshino City is also famous for "Ureshino Onsen," a hot spring renowned nationally for its effects on skin with sodium bicarbonate spring water. Tea shops, souvenir stores, ryokan, and hotels line the hot spring town, allowing simultaneous enjoyment of hot springs and Ureshino tea.

Tea Field Scenery

Vast tea fields spread across Ureshino's hilly terrain, with beautiful green carpets spreading during the fresh greenery season (Aprilโ€“May). Stays at accommodations with tea field views are also popular.

Access

Approximately 30 minutes by bus from JR Nagasaki Main Line "Hizen Kashima Station." Also within walking distance from Nagasaki Shinkansen (Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen) "Ureshino Onsen Station."
