Ancient Lotus Village: 1,400-Year-Old Lotus Blossoms in Gyoda
Lotus Revived from 1,400 Years of Sleep
The "Ancient Lotus Village" in Gyoda City is where "Gyoda Lotus," germinated from ancient seeds estimated to be 1,400-3,000 years old discovered during construction, blooms. The large pale pink flowers are unique to Gyoda Lotus, and there is also a "World Lotus" area with ancient lotuses gathered from around the world.
Early Morning Bloom Viewing
Lotus flowers open in early morning and close in the afternoon, so the best viewing time is 6-9 AM. Lotuses blooming in morning mist are mystical, well worth waking early for. July is the peak blooming period.
Observatory Rice Paddy Art
The Ancient Lotus Village has an observatory from which you can view rice paddy art ranked second largest in Japan. The giant picture drawn using different rice colors can only be fully appreciated from the observatory above.
