Hinomisaki in Taisha Town, Izumo City, Shimane is a scenic spot at the westernmost tip of the Izumo Peninsula. Long revered as the "sacred site of sunsets in the land of the sun," it has been known as a place of sunset worship since ancient times.
Hinomisaki Lighthouse
"Hinomisaki Lighthouse" standing at the tip of Hinomisaki Cape is Japan's tallest stone lighthouse at 43.65 meters. First lit in 1903 (Meiji 36), it still functions actively today. The lighthouse is open for inspection (interior viewing), with spectacular Sea of Japan views spreading from the top.
Hinomisaki Shrine
"Hinomisaki Shrine" located slightly inland from Hinomisaki Lighthouse is a venerable shrine enshrining Amaterasu Omikami and Susanoo-no-Mikoto. With two shrine halls — "Hishizumi-no-miya" and "Kami-no-miya" — the two lacquered shrine halls are designated as National Important Cultural Properties.
Fumishima Island, Black-Tailed Gull Breeding Ground
"Fumishima Island" floating offshore from Hinomisaki is designated as a Natural Monument as a breeding ground for black-tailed gulls (umineko). From spring through early summer, thousands of black-tailed gulls gather on the island, and their lively calling can be observed.
