Tamatsukuri Onsen: Famous Hot Spring on the Izumo Road Known for Skin-Beautifying Waters and Tamayukuri-yu Shrine
Tamatsukuri Onsen in Tamayu Town, Matsue City, Shimane is a historic hot spring along the ancient transportation route connecting Izumo and Yamato, recorded in Nara-period documents. The legend tells that Sukunabikona-no-kami, known as the "god of hot springs," dug and discovered the sacred spring.
Skin-Beautifying Spring Water Quality
Tamatsukuri Onsen's spring water type is simple weakly alkaline hypotonic spring. Containing components that soften skin proteins, it is nationally known as "skin-beautifying water" called "Ichiyoku Tama no Hada" (one bath, jewel-like skin) for leaving skin silky smooth after bathing.
Tamatsukuri-yu Shrine and Magatama Jewels
"Tamatsukuri-yu Shrine" located at the center of the hot spring town enshrines guardian deities of the hot spring and Tamatsukuri. The precincts have a "wish-granting stone," said to grant wishes when combined with one's own magatama jewel. Magatama-making experiences unique to the Izumo region are also available.
Strolling the Hot Spring Town and Foot Baths
Many ryokan inns and hotels line Tamatsukuri Onsen Town. Foot baths are set up throughout the hot spring town for enjoying the skin-beautifying waters while strolling.
