Nikko Cryptomeria Avenue: The World's Longest Tree-Lined Road
World's Longest Avenue of Trees
Nikko Cryptomeria Avenue stretches approximately 35km along three historic highways. Planted in the early Edo period as the approach to Nikko Toshogu, it is designated a Special Historic Site and Special Natural Monument.
History Spanning the Edo Period
About 13,000 cryptomeria trees survive today, with some over 400 years old. Walking the same road as Edo-period travelers under the shade of these ancient trees connects you to history.
Mystical Autumn-Winter Morning Mist
From autumn to winter, morning mist envelops the avenue in a fantastical atmosphere. Morning sunlight filtering through the mist creates a mystical ambiance perfectly suited to the journey to Nikko.
