Mizuki Shigeru Road, where 177 bronze statues modeled on yokai from manga artist Shigeru Mizuki's works line approximately 800 meters of road from JR Sakaiminato Station to Honmachi Arcade in Sakaiminato City, Tottori, is Tottori Prefecture's largest tourist spot attracting over 3 million visitors annually.
Shigeru Mizuki and Sakaiminato
Shigeru Mizuki (1922-2015) was a manga artist born in Sakaiminato City whose works including "GeGeGe no Kitaro," "Akuma-kun," and "Kappa no Sanpei" spread Japanese yokai culture as a master artist. Since Mizuki Shigeru Road was developed in 1993, Sakaiminato City has become nationally known as "the city of yokai."
Photo Spots with Yokai
Along the road, bronze statues of popular yokai including Kitaro, Medama-oyaji, Neko-musume, Nezumi-otoko, Sunakake-babaa, and Konaki-jiji appear one after another. Mimicking each yokai's pose and taking commemorative photos together is fun for everyone from children to adults.
