Kurayoshi White-Walled Storehouses: San'in's Little Kyoto Preserving Edo and Meiji Era Atmosphere
The "White-Walled Storehouse District" spreading along the Tamagawa River in central Kurayoshi City, Tottori is an area where many merchant storehouses and residences built from the Edo through Meiji periods still remain. Selected as a National Important Traditional Buildings Preservation District, it is popular with tourists as "the Little Kyoto of San'in."
Beautiful Townscape of White Walls and Red Tiles
The white-walled storehouse district of the Utsubuki Tamagawa area forms a beautiful landscape with impressive contrast of white plastered walls and red Sekishu roof tiles. The tranquil scenery of stone bridges over the Tamagawa and white-walled storehouses looks like a period drama set, popular as a photogenic spot.
Storehouses Converted to Cafes and Craft Shops
Many storehouses are now converted to cafes, galleries, and craft shops, allowing shopping and dining while strolling. Locally made souvenirs are abundant including Kurayoshi pottery (ceramics) and sweets made with local pears.
Utsubuki Park and Cherry Blossom Viewing
"Utsubuki Park" adjacent to the white-walled storehouse district is known for cherry blossoms and azaleas. In spring, approximately 500 cherry trees bloom magnificently, drawing many flower viewers.
