Matsuba Crab: Savoring Tottori's Exquisite Snow Crab, Winter King of the Sea of Japan
"Matsuba Crab" is the San'in region name for male snow crabs caught in the Sea of Japan off the San'in coast. Landed during the fishing season from the opening day of November 6 through around March 20, fresh Matsuba crabs are loved by crab enthusiasts nationwide as Japan's finest.
How to Eat Matsuba Crab and Flavor Appeal
The ways to enjoy Matsuba crab are richly varied: "boiled crab" enjoyed simply boiled; "kani-sashi," raw crab served as sashimi; "shell serving" with the shell used as a vessel (also called koubako); and finishing with "crab porridge" โ all are exquisite. The harmony of the sweet, fibrous meat and rich crab miso is extraordinary.
Landing Ports and Auction Viewing
Main Matsuba crab landing ports in Tottori Prefecture include Tottori Port, Karo Port, and Ajiro Port. At Karo Port, the "Kanikko-kan" offers crab exhibits and experiences. During fishing season, port auctions are lively, with special application potentially allowing viewing.
Crab-Specialized Ryokan and Day-Trip Plans
During Matsuba crab season, "crab kaiseki" courses at ryokan inns are popular. Full courses with successive crab dishes delivered one after another are unforgettable once experienced. Day-trip crab specialty restaurants also abound near each port.
