Kumano Hayatama Taisha: Experiencing Vermilion Shrine Halls and the World of the Gods
Kumano Hayatama Taisha in Shingu City, Wakayama is a prestigious shrine forming the "Kumano Sanzan" together with Kumano Hongu Taisha and Kumano Nachi Taisha. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 as part of the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range."
Vermilion Shrine Halls
Within the precincts of Hayatama Taisha stand 12 vermilion shrine halls, with the vivid vermilion color complementing Kumano's green trees. The main deities are Kumano Hayatama no Okami and Kumano Fusumi no Okami, said to bring blessings for forming relationships, severing bad ties, and marital harmony.
The Nagi Tree: Leaf Amulets
The "Nagi tree" standing in the precincts is a large tree said to be approximately 1,000 years old, designated as a National Natural Monument. Nagi leaves have fibers only in the vertical direction and are difficult to tear horizontally. From this property โ "relationships that don't cut" โ they have been popular as love amulets, and the custom of pilgrims to Kumano taking them home has existed since the Heian period.
Kumano Shinpokan Museum
The "Kumano Shinpokan Museum" adjacent to Hayatama Taisha displays Kumano divine treasures including National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. Items donated by Retired Emperor Goshirakawa and Retired Emperor Gotoba, showing the depth of faith in Kumano, are displayed.
