Kushimoto and Hashigui Rocks: Spectacular Rock Formation Where You Feel Earth's Heartbeat

Kushimoto Town in Higashimuro District, Wakayama is located at the southernmost tip of Honshu, featuring a rich marine ecosystem blessed by the Kuroshio Current and a unique landscape. The representative scenery is the "Hashigui Rocks."

Hashigui Rocks: Legend of Kobo Daishi and the Demon

Over approximately 850 meters from Kushimoto toward Oshima Island, over 40 large and small rock pillars stand in a straight line like bridge pilings. Designated as a National Natural Monument, there is a legend that "Kobo Daishi attempted to build a bridge in one night, but was obstructed by a demon, leaving only the pilings." At low tide, visitors can walk between the rocks, and the silhouette of rocks overlapping with sunset or sunrise is also famous.

Kai Kondo: Coastal Beauty of Sheer Cliffs

"Kai Kondo" spreading across southern Kushimoto features a magnificent coastal landscape with continuous 20-30 meter sheer cliffs. The powerful sight of rough waves crashing against the rock face overwhelms visitors.

Kushimoto Marine Park: Tropical Fish World Nurtured by the Kuroshio

At "Kushimoto Marine Park," visitors can observe the rich marine ecosystem brought by the Kuroshio Current through glass. The underwater observation tower offers close-up views of coral and schools of tropical fish, and snorkeling and diving are also popular.

Access

About 15 minutes on foot from JR Kushimoto Station (to Hashigui Rocks). About 3-4 hours from Osaka by limited express or highway bus.
