Wakanoura and Tamatsushima Shrine: Touring the Scenic Spot Celebrated in Manyoshu Poetry
Wakanoura in southern Wakayama City is a scenic spot that has been celebrated as a "utamakura" (poetically famous place) by many poets since the Nara period. The Man'yoshu anthology includes the poem "When the tide fills in Wakanoura, the beach disappears and cranes call out flying toward the reeds," conveying its beauty all the way to the capital.
Tamatsushima Shrine and Imoseyama
Wakanoura's symbol is "Tamatsushima Shrine." The shrine located on the small island "Imoseyama" floating in the sea enshrines Princess Sotoorihime as its main deity, and has been venerated by many historical literati as the deity of Japanese poetry.
Furo Bridge and Kimiidera Temple
The stone arch bridge "Furo Bridge" built during the Bunsei era of the Edo period is designated an Important Cultural Property. Also, a short distance from Wakanoura is "Kimiidera Temple," the second temple on the 33-temple Saigoku Pilgrimage. Three spring waters are the origin of the temple's name, and climbing 231 stone steps reveals a spectacular view of Wakanoura Bay.
