Koya-Ryujin Skyline: Scenic Drive Route Crossing the Kii Mountains

The "Koya-Ryujin Skyline" (National Route 371) connecting Koyasan (Koya Town) and Ryujin Onsen (Tanabe City) in Wakayama Prefecture is a mountain road running approximately 42 kilometers along the Kii Mountain ridgeline at 1,000-1,382 meters elevation. It is popular with drivers and motorcycle tourers as a scenic route for experiencing the great nature of the Kii Mountains.

Gomadanzan and Ryujinzan

"Gomadanzan" (elevation 1,372m) located near the middle of the skyline is a renowned peak once considered the highest mountain in Wakayama Prefecture. The current highest peak is the adjacent "Ryujinzan" (elevation 1,382m). Both offer magnificent views from their summits, with the entire Kii Mountain Range visible on clear days.

Four Seasons of Spectacular Views

Spring: Mountain cherry blossoms and fresh greenery color the mountains. Summer: Cool mountain climate makes for comfortable drives. Autumn: Yellow and red foliage of beech and Mongolian oak dyes the mountain road β€” the skyline's peak season. Winter: Some sections close due to snow accumulation, but the snowy mountain scenery is fantastical.

Road Station: Tanabe City Ryujin Gomasan Sky Tower

The road station "Tanabe City Ryujin Gomasan Sky Tower" on the skyline features an observation tower named after Gomadanzan as its main attraction. From the tower, visitors enjoy 360-degree panoramic views. Local specialty product sales and a restaurant are also well-equipped.

Access

Koyasan side: About 30 minutes by car from Nankai Koyasan Station. Ryujin Onsen side: About 1.5 hours by car from JR Kii-Tanabe Station.
