Iwakuni City in Yamaguchi Prefecture is a special city where the contrasting presences of Kintaikyo Bridge, a famous Edo-period bridge, and the modern US Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni coexist. A unique environment has been created where Japanese traditional culture and contemporary American culture intersect.
Iwakuni Friendship Day
"Iwakuni Friendship Day" held every May is a once-a-year event where the US Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni is opened to the general public. Military aircraft displays, aerobatic flying (air shows), American food stalls, and Japanese-American cultural exchange programs are held. It is a popular event drawing over 100,000 visitors every year.
Iwakuni Castle and White Snake Village
Iwakuni Castle near Kintaikyo Bridge can be reached by mountaintop ropeway. Below the castle is "Shirasaki Village" where Iwakuni's native white snakes (albino specimens of Japanese rat snakes) are kept and displayed.
Iwakuni Sushi
"Iwakuni Sushi," a local dish of Iwakuni, is pressed sushi with toppings layered on vinegared rice in a wooden box and pressed with a weight. Said to have originated as portable military food during the domain era, it is served at festivals and celebratory occasions.
Access
Approximately 15 minutes by bus from JR Iwakuni Station to Kintaikyo Bridge. Accessible from Hiroshima by Shinkansen (Shin-Iwakuni Station) or local train.
